When audiences step into Arendelle this October, they’ll be in the hands of one of Newcastle’s most accomplished musical theatre performers.
Two-time CONDA Award winner Zoe Walker has been cast as Elsa in Disney’s Frozen The Broadway Musical, a role she describes as the most personal and complex character she has ever portrayed.
Highly regarded among Newcastle’s most accomplished performers, Zoe has appeared at the Civic Theatre as Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins and most recently in Superstars: Heroes vs Villains. Her acclaimed performances as Velma Kelly in Chicago and Leading Player in Pippin, along with award-winning roles in The Drowsy Chaperone and She Loves Me, have established her as one of the region’s standout performers.
For Zoe, however, Elsa is much more than another leading role.
“I was 12 when Frozen came out, and immediately I was obsessed with it,” she says. “Disney, especially Frozen, was a big part of my childhood. Learning every song with my sister, cousins and friends created memories I’ll always treasure, so continuing that journey as an adult is really special.”
While audiences know Elsa from the beloved animated film, Zoe believes the stage musical reveals an even richer character.
“Elsa’s differences make her so unique,” she explains. “Throughout the musical we see her learn that her magic shouldn’t be feared, but appreciated for what it is. The show also explores just how afraid she is of herself and what she might be capable of. It’s a much deeper journey.”
She’s particularly excited for audiences to experience the emotional power of the stage production, especially the breathtaking Act Two finale.
“There are moments in this show that will leave audiences stopped in their tracks. The music, the drama and the emotion are extraordinary.”
For anyone wondering whether Frozen is worth seeing live, Zoe’s answer is simple.
“The musical must be seen to be believed. Watching Elsa’s powers come to life just metres away from you is something completely different to watching it on screen. Live theatre lets you experience the story together, in the same room, and that makes it even more magical.”
As the season approaches, Zoe hopes audiences leave the theatre carrying the show’s timeless message with them.
“Frozen reminds us to love without judgement or fear. I hope people leave inspired to share, create and connect with the people they love.”
And if she could sum up the experience in one sentence?
